Eine aussergewöhnliche Perspektive auf Heirat und Familie in Simbabwe.
Iria Mudimu ist Filmemacherin, Anthropologin und und Kommunikationsfachfrau bei fepa. Der Dokumentarfilm You Are Our Daughter Now ist im Rahmen ihrer Masterarbeit im Studiengang visuelle und mediale Anthropologie zum Thema Roora: Der traditionelle Shona Hochzeitsgebrauch – Die Umkehrung des male gaze entstanden. An der Diskussion wird auch ihre Schwiegermutter Angela Mudimu teilnehmen, die neben ihrer Schwiegertochter eine Hauptrolle in dem Film spielt und die Masterarbeit massgeblich inspiriert hat.
Roora, der traditionelle simbabwische Hochzeitsbrauch, ist die Aushandlung und Zahlung des «Brautpreises». Aufgrund des patriarchalischen Charakters der Zeremonie verfügt die Braut nur wenig Wissen darüber, was in ihrer eigenen Hochzeitszeremonie passiert. You Are Our Daughter Now gibt den Frauen eine Stimme. Als ethnografischer Film setzt er sich mit der Möglichkeit auseinandern, den in Roora dominanten männlichen Blick durch eine weibliche Perspektive zu erweitern. Durch die kritische Analyse ermächtigt der Film (junge) simbabwische Frauen dazu, Roora für zukünftige Generationen neu zu erfinden, und zu einer Praxis zu machen, die mehr Mitbestimmung und Inklusion ermöglicht.

An extraordinary perspective on marriage and family in Zimbabwe.
Iria Mudimu is a filmmaker, anthropologist, and communications specialist at fepa. The documentary You Are Our Daughter Now was created as part of a master’s thesis in the visual and media anthropology program on the topic of Roora: The traditional Shona marriage custom – The subversion of the male gaze. Also present for the discussion will be her mother-in-law Angela Mudimu who is a protagonist in the film along her daughter-in-law and who played and who was an essential inspiration for the master thesis.
Roora, the traditional Zimbabwean wedding custom, is the negotiation and payment of the conventionally termed «bride price». Because of the patriarchal nature of the ceremony, the bride has little knowledge of what is happening in her own wedding ceremony. You Are Our Daughter Now gives women a voice. As an ethnographic film, it explores the opportunity to expand the male gaze, which is predominant in Roora, with a female perspective. Through critical analysis, the film empowers (young) Zimbabwean women to reinvent Roora for future generations, making it a practice that allows for greater empowerment and inclusion.
